A global food manufacturer needed reliable, enterprise-reachable coverage for ~19 outdoor perimeter and machine-vision cameras across a 7.3-million-sq-ft multi-building site - without trenching fiber. ### **Customer problem**

A global food manufacturer set out to modernize physical security and machine vision across one of its largest production sites — a 7.3 million square foot campus of buildings, yards, a rail spur, and process infrastructure.

The plan called for roughly 19 outdoor cameras: thermal and PTZ units watching fence lines, gates, and process areas, feeding AI vision models for safety and compliance. The hard part wasn't the cameras — it was getting reliable, enterprise-reachable connectivity to all of them across a huge outdoor footprint, without trenching fiber to every mount. Every new camera position would otherwise mean its own trenching project, and even then the feeds still need to be visible and reachable from the enterprise network, not stranded on an island.

### **Celona solution**

The team turned to Celona Orion to connect the cameras without trenching a foot of fiber. Eight private 5G AP25 access points now blanket the site's outdoor perimeter and process areas, co-located with the cameras on existing structure — gantries, poles, conveyor steel — so each camera and its connectivity share one mount with no new cabling run to it. Before install, the team ran a measured signal survey and mapped every planned camera position against real signal strength, from strong near an AP to still-workable at the farthest unit, so coverage was verified, not assumed.

The signal survey held up in production: every camera and thermal-sensor position landed in usable range, and MicroSlicing kept each stream in its own guaranteed class, holding latency under 30 ms with RTSP video identified automatically. The result is camera-ready bandwidth for all 19 outdoor cameras on just eight APs — roughly 6–8 Mbps per single-stream camera and 17–18 Mbps for quad-stream units — delivered predictably so the AI vision models always work off a clean, live feed, while Wi-Fi keeps carrying tablets and general traffic on the same footprint.

The economics were just as clear: covering the whole site took eight APs instead of a trenching program, for more than 50% savings versus running fiber to outdoor cameras. As a benchmark, fiber to light a single outdoor camera on a comparable site ran roughly 20 times the cost of the camera itself — the kind of math that keeps camera projects from getting off the ground. Private 5G removes that barrier: add a camera where you need one, point it at coverage that's already there.

The perimeter build wasn't just for cameras, either. The same outdoor private 5G layer now also carries connected-worker tablets and condition-monitoring sensors — a 3-for-1 return on one infrastructure investment.
