# Perimeter cameras on private 5G - 7.3M sq ft, 19 cameras, zero trenching or cabling

Reliable coverage for 19 outdoor cameras across a 7.3M sq-ft site — eight private-5G APs, no trenched fiber.

## Site-wide camera coverage, no trench required.

### \_01 The Challenge

- ~19 outdoor perimeter + machine-vision cameras (thermal + PTZ)
- 7.3M sq-ft multi-building site to cover end to end
- Full coverage needed without trenching fiber
- Cameras must be reachable from the enterprise network
- 6–8 Mbps single / 17–18 Mbps quad

### \_02 The Solution

- 8× Celona private-5G AP25 covering the whole site
- Camera positions mapped with a measured signal survey
- MicroSlicing gives each stream its own guaranteed class
- APs co-located with cameras on existing structure

### \_03 The Outcome

- Verified coverage — every planned camera position in range
- Deterministic streams — under 30 ms, RTSP auto-identified
- Camera-ready bandwidth for a real 19-camera outdoor site
- 50%+ lower cost than trenching fiber to each camera

> "The OT team wanted to add machine vision for perimeter security and numerous sensors to the network, and the concern was that traditional enterprise connectivity couldn't address it. That's what triggered our exploration of a converged, enterprise-first wireless layer for OT."

A global food manufacturer set out to modernize physical security and machine vision across one of its largest production sites — a 7.3-million-sq-ft campus of buildings, yards, a rail spur, and process infrastructure. The plan called for roughly 19 outdoor cameras: thermal and PTZ units watching fence lines, gates, and process areas, feeding AI-vision models. The hard part wasn't the cameras. It was getting reliable, enterprise-reachable connectivity to all of them, across a huge outdoor footprint, without trenching fiber to every mount.

## Why cabling every camera didn't work

Wiring outdoor cameras across a site this size is slow and expensive. Copper PoE tops out around 100 m before it needs extenders, and buried fiber conduit runs real money per foot — enough that lighting a single outdoor camera with fiber can cost many times the camera itself. Every new camera position becomes a trenching project, and the site still needs those feeds visible and reachable from the enterprise network, not stranded on an island.

## One private-5G layer, eight APs

Instead of trenching, Celona put down a private-5G layer across the site with just eight AP25 access points. Before install, the team ran a measured signal survey and mapped every planned camera position against real RSSI — from strong signal near an AP down to a still-workable level at the farthest perimeter unit — so coverage was verified, not assumed. The access points were co-located with cameras on existing structure (gantries, poles, conveyor steel), so a camera and its connectivity share the same mount with no new cabling run to it.

  ![01 hero coverage signal survey](https://celona.io/volumes/images/Resources/_2450x1618_fit_center-center_70_none_ffffff/53940/01_hero-coverage_signal-survey.webp) ## Deterministic, not best-effort

Camera and machine-vision streams don't tolerate a best-effort network — a dropped frame is a missed detection. Celona's MicroSlicing gives each stream its own guaranteed QoS class across the fabric, holding latency under 30 ms, and RTSP video is identified automatically and placed in the right class. The result is camera-ready bandwidth for a real 19-camera outdoor site on about eight APs: roughly 6–8 Mbps per single-stream camera and ~17–18 Mbps for quad-stream units, delivered predictably so the AI-vision models always work off a clean, live feed. Wi-Fi keeps carrying the site's connected-worker tablets and general traffic on the same footprint — the right technology for each job.

## The economics

The cost case is stark. Verified coverage of the whole site came from eight APs rather than a trenching program, landing 50%+ below the cost of running fiber to outdoor cameras. As a benchmark from a comparable industrial site, fiber to light a single outdoor camera ran on the order of 20× the cost of the camera itself — the kind of math that keeps outdoor camera projects from ever getting off the ground. Private 5G removes that barrier: add a camera where you need one, point it at coverage that's already there.

## One investment, three workloads

The perimeter coverage wasn't just for cameras. The same outdoor private-5G layer the site built for security now carries connected-worker tablets and condition-monitoring sensors on the one fabric — a "3-for-1" return on a single infrastructure investment.

> "It's a 3-for-1: one external perimeter infrastructure investment enables cameras, connected-worker, and condition-monitoring sensor connectivity."
